The roof of this house was damaged and during a particularly rainy day, the damage to the roof lead to water leaking in and affecting the ceiling in the main room. The image you see here is just a visual of how bad the damage ended up being. The owners decided to reach out to us for the drying and the restoration of their property, and we were happy to help. It’s crazy to think something as simple as an ice maker could cause so much damage. That was the case in this home though. The ice maker malfunctioned, and when it did it damaged the man floor of this house, and the lower level of the house was damaged as well. The cause of the damage for this job was undoubtedly unique, but as you can see above, the drying process was completed and the customer has been able to move on to the restoration part of the process.

When the window of this customer’s house was broken, it resulted in a great deal of water damage to the floors. After we got the window boarded up, we removed the flooring to get everything completely dried. Now that it’s done, the customer is well on their way to getting the flooring replaced and being able to move on from the experience.

As mentioned in the last post, this basement is the storage area for an antique shop. The mud and the water had completely covered the floor and the contents. We are grateful that the owner has trusted us with the task of cleaning and restoring the area. Our teams are happy to be Here to Help!

Electrical fires are not a joke. They are dangerous and unpredictable. There are few things out there that can lead to both electrocution and varying degrees of burns. So take caution when you plug appliances into outlets, whether you leave them plugged in for a while or not. You wouldn’t want to find yourself in a similar situation to this one.

It’s strange to think that a little thing like a broken refrigerator line could cause damage to this extent. It is possible though, and the image shown here is proof. Water from the broken line upstairs leaked into the basement and caused a whole mess of problems. Mold is easy to miss when it hides within and behind the walls of your home or business. It’s not often that you have access to the backsides of the walls to see what’s going on. That being said, if you are worried this could be something happening on your property, please reach out to your local SERVPRO® for the mold remediation.

The image shown here is of a moldy basement wall. This may look like something caused by severe damage, but something like this could begin to form in any basement where the moisture levels are too high. Keep a lookout for spots like this forming in your basement, or else you could be the one facing a moldy situation!

This is the result of the same damage from a previous post. It is important for commercial buildings that have been closed for business to be maintained. The unattended sprinkler system in this building was set off and the entire building was unknowingly covered in water, which when left alone, lead to mold.

Sump-pump failure can lead to big trouble. As shown in this photo, the water escaped the sump-pump room and made its way into a carpeted room of the house. Luckily we were able to clean the carpet and everything else affected!

This office had a pipe break and water got everywhere. Due to the type of business that was done in the building, it was important that it was dealt with fast and efficiently. So the people who work in the building made the move to call us for the cleaning and restoration.

Closed or abandoned buildings don’t always get the attention or maintenance that they need. If they are not properly monitored, situations like this can occur. You are looking at damage left after the building sprinkler system went off in a building that was closed down. The water wasn’t cleaned up, and mold started to grow in every place that was left wet.

Don’t underestimate the damage water can do if it isn’t cleaned up. Secondary damage is easy to avoid if you are proactive about water damage.

This empty house was hit with water damage that did damage in multiple rooms. When our team came to the scene they knew they were going to need to focus hard on getting the floors dried. Luckily, it was possible for the techs to get underneath the floorboards and get the base of the floor dried. In doing this they helped to reduce the risk of further damage from mold.

Sometimes the equipment that is laid throughout your property after you face damage can seem like a nuisance. However, the clunky-looking machines are there for a very specific purpose, and they are placed in the positions they are for optimal drying results. If you are ever curious about the process of laying the machines, feel free to ask the team members on your job. They are more than happy to explain it!

This office building was wracked with water damage recently. Water ended up filling up office and storage areas alike. In this particular room, you can see that the carpet is soaked and there are parts of the ceiling on the floor. There were plenty more rooms like this. Water damage of this magnitude has the potential to slow the way a business runs. That is why the client made the choice to call us and get the water dried out and the building restored by our teams.

We’ve talked about secondary fire damage before, but this image is a good example of how far it can spread throughout a building. This bathroom vent had been spitting out smoke and soot from a fire that happened on the floor below. This happened with other vents in the house. We hope that images like these will make it clear that secondary damage can be just as consuming as primary fire damage.

When a pipe bursts for whatever reason, there are varying degrees to the damage that can be done to the pipe. Sometimes pipes will split into just a small crack in the metal. Sometimes they will split in a way that looks like a compressed tube of crescent rolls will. On the far end of the spectrum, you will have a burst like the one here which looks like explosives were involved. With a break this severe, this commercial building was soaked in multiple rooms. That is why they called for our teams here at SERVPRO® to do the water cleanup and restoration.

One of the most conspicuous forms of damage is fire/smoke damage, and the image here is substantial proof. The clean, white interior of this kitchen is a completely different color thanks to the secondary damage of the fire that took place. If you find yourself dealing with a think layer of black soot, please don’t hesitate to call us. Our teams are more than happy to come in and clean the soot from your home and to bring in the contents of your home and restore what we can here in our facility.

It’s hard to know what to expect when water mitigation and dry-out are started on your property. This particular commercial property had a good amount of equipment placed. As seen here, there were air-movers (the small green machines) and dehumidifiers (the large machine) in this room. These are common machines to see during a water job. If you have questions about the equipment, your technicians will be happy to explain what they are and what they do during the job!

The board-up you see here is one that helps to keep the inside of the home from any further damage. It is not uncommon to see a board-up like this after a fire or after storm damage. The board-up helps keep the elements out of the house while our teams finish the restoration process on the inside. This is an important step in making it possible for our teams to make the damage, “Like it never even happened.”

It’s important to know how to get to the source of the issue when it comes to water damage. When that damage is in the ceiling the only real way to get to it is to go through it. In this office building, it was a little easier because our teams were able to pop the ceiling tiles off and get them out of the way. Just remember, whether the source is more or less accessible, you can always count on SERVPRO® to make the water damage feel “Like it never even happened.”

These photos show the true two damages when a building catches fire. There is the initial damage from the fire, and there is the water damage that comes afterward. Luckily, our teams at SERVPRO® can clean and restore both types of damage.

It’s not uncommon for garage fires to start, and in this client’s case, it was a car that did the starting. The image shown here is an example of how bad the car burned and a reminder that you should always check that nothing flammable is left in your car. If you do, you might just end up needing to make a call to SERVPRO®.

Fallen limbs can be a real hazard, and not just as they are falling. In the image here you can see the damage left by a large branch that fell during a storm. It fell from the tree and hit the gutter on the garage, pulling a good-sized section right off of the structure. It even damaged some of the shingles on the roof. Of course, the rain continued to fall and water began to damage the garage as well. Luckily the owners called SERVPRO® and the loss was taken care of.

The gunk in this photo is a stomach-turning mix of debris you would normally find in a crawlspace and sewage that backed up into space. Damage like this is something that property owners should call in professionals for. These spaces are hard to navigate without proper training and this type of damage is dangerous to deal with if you don’t have the right protective equipment.

The image shown here is an example of just how bad garage fired can get and all of the damage they can cause. The garage door here is discolored from the fire and soot. You can also see that the trim around the garage is burnt as well. While we were happy to help with the cleaning and restoration of the property, this is sadly not the first or last time we will be called out for a job like this.

Garages can be dangerous places without fires, so please take caution and stay safe!

There are no words to describe the frustration of sump pump problems. Taking care of them is a necessity, and doing it correctly and fast is important, especially in extreme cases like the one shown above. In these types of situations, you can always contact SERVPRO® for the cleanup and restoration.

We see a lot of mold in our line of work. The sad thing is that a majority of mold comes from either not knowing that moisture is there or from houses buildings being left empty. The image here is a result of the latter rather than the former. This building left empty ended up having mold growth in the drywall that required professional attention.

Of course, it’s nobody’s fault, these things just happen sometimes. Just make sure you call in professionals who will know how to alleviate the problem.

It’s hard to imagine that the outside of your house needs to be cleaned almost as regularly as the inside. It does though, and if you don’t take care of it you could end up with an issue like the one pictured here. The last thing you want is to end up having to replace the siding on your home because mold growths got out of control.

There is no limit to what damage unclean vents can do. Taking the time to clean your vents regularly is the best way to avoid issues, but if you can’t find the time or don’t know what to look for you should call in a professional. Clean vents help you avoid breathing issues from dust or mold, and it helps to prevent accidental fires.

You can sum up a sewage backup by simply saying that it’s intrusive and it smells.

These kinds of tiles can be frustrating due to them being so easily damaged. However, in this situation, these tiles made things a bit easier. There was a pipe burst in the basement ceiling, and while there was a little bit of damage it was easier to get to the broken pipe because it was easier to access. Easier access means faster repairs, and that’s something everyone can be happy about!

Smoke and soot will go just about anywhere. When there was a grease fire in the kitchen of this client’s house, the soot-covered every inch of the house - including the bathtub! So they called us, and we sent a team out to get things cleaned up. Good thing they did too because it’s hard to get clean in the shower when the tub is a mess.

When you bathe, you want the shower/tub in which you’re cleaning yourself in to be clean. However, if a home is left untouched for a while (whether because it’s for sale or it’s not a full-time home) leftover water can cause mold to form. This is the kind of thing that you can avoid by making sure that leaks are managed and that any water is dried up before you leave the home for long periods of time. It may seem like busywork, but it’s less work than getting mold cleaned up.

This image may look silly among all the other images we post, but it fits right in. This split tree limb is an example of the type of tree damage that can cause all kinds of damage and loss to a home/business. This particular broken limb left an opening in a home during a storm that let in water. So not only was the building damaged from the limb, there was structural and content water damage, too. Watch the trees around your home or business. If it looks like there’s a branch that could fall onto or into the building, get the branch or the tree removed.

It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Air conditioners are meant to keep you comfortable when the heat and humidity get to be too much (and both have definitely been an issue here in Central Illinois this year). However, when condensation builds up and goes unnoticed, you can end up with a good amount of mold in areas around the AC. Be sure to keep an eye out for any spots that might be growing. Catching mold early can make it easier to take care of it!

There’s no denying that fire damage is an ugly sight. Nobody wants a chared stove or a scorched cupboard. So when you are cooking or using candles it is important to follow safety precautions. They may seem like a mundane waste of time while you do them, but it’s better to do it now and be safe later than to end up with fire damage to your home (or business).

It’s true. When there is a flood in a building, the floors are what you’ll usually notice are damaged. However, if you look at the photo here, you can see some very clear damage to the walls as well that is trickling down from the upstairs floor, which is the ceiling to the basement. Weatherising is a common practice for people who leave their homes for the winter. As shown here, toilets need to be weatherized to prevent seasonal damage, especially when there is nobody to maintain the appliance. However, what is shown here is what happens when even the most prepared people fall victim to the weather. Don’t think that we only get calls about homes or businesses. There have been plenty of times that we have seen jobs for external structures as well. When structures like sheds fall we take the call. If it makes sense for us to restore the property, we will do our best to make it happen!

It’s never a fun moment when you get a leak in your ceiling. It’s especially frustrating though when the leak goes unnoticed long enough to form mold. When that happens you can contact your local SERVPRO® to help fix the mold issue.

Everyone knows the smell of burnt plastic. That was the smell that coupled with the fire damage shown here. The funny part is that the fire didn’t come from the inside of the microwave, it came from a pan below the microwave. Our team came in to clean up the smoke damage and get the burnt plastic smell out of the kitchen.

Toilets leak and sometimes people miss the bowl. Either way, there is always a chance for water damage to happen around the porcelain throne. The image shown here is from a job with just that issue. So keep an eye out. If you see your bathroom tile looking really dingy around the toilet, get it checked or check it yourself. It doesn’t look like much, but a hole this size can let in more than enough water and other messy materials to cause some real damage. If you have an attic, there is sure to be some damage up there. If you don’t have an attic, be ready to have some residual damage in whatever room is below this spot.

If you see that a tree or other debris has fallen on your house please don’t wait to check if there is any damage. The speed at which you fix things can make all the difference!

There was a home that we were called out to that had some fire damage. There were smoke and soot that affected a good amount of the contents of the house and the majority of the surfaces inside the house. The section that has already been tackled is white again, contrasting greatly from the section that is still gray and dirty.

Not a pretty word. Not a pretty bug. Not a pretty mess.

These little bugs can be a death sentence for any building that they can chomp down on. While we may not be able to exterminate the little pests, we certainly have the ability to help with the mess and the damage they leave behind when they go. Our heroes are Here to Help® with a wide variety of damages. This wasn’t the first and will not be the last time we are called for pest-related damages.

Training is an important part of any job. However, it becomes the most important thing when the job you do can be the difference between life and death. That is why we jumped at the opportunity to help with the training done by the Central Illinois Fire Investigation Association (CIFIA). We constructed five small burn houses to help train the Central Illinois Fire Professionals, and those of us who could attend the training day got to go and watch.

We are so happy that we got the opportunity and that the CIFIA chose us to help them out! We’re happy that they know that we’re always Here to Help®.

Mold is not just an issue for damp residential basements. Mold can appear in any spot that isn’t dry or well ventilated. This means residential buildings aren’t the only ones at risk. Commercial buildings are just as likely to experience it. Of course, this doesn’t mean that commercial buildings/businesses that end up with mold are poorly maintained. It takes something as simple as a big storm or excess humidity to cause this issue.

A dryer’s job is to dry your clothes - not fry your clothes. The nightmare-inducing image shown here is that of a dryer which did just that, causing damage not only to the machine but to the area around the machine as well. When all of this happened, the client called us because they needed help getting fire mess cleaned up and the other affected areas (like the wall) fixed up as well. Our SERVPRO® Heroes gladly came in and got the job done.

When the snow melts, it turns to water. When this water builds it can tear up the walls an ceilings of a building. This particular image shows damages to a church building that had suffered after the tough winter we had here in Central Illinois. It is damage like this that we here at SERVPRO® are more than happy to come and restore for those who decide to call on us.

Sometimes buildings are allowed to accumulate a certain level of grime. Floors and walls become caked with hard to clean filth. Mattresses are difficult to live without and pretty costly to replace. When you experience damages from water or fire, you shouldn’t always have to worry about replacing your mattress. The last thing anyone expects is for a four-wheeled machine to come bursting through the front of your home or business. Even if there’s nobody inside the building, it can be one of the most dangerous situations. The picture here is of the damage from that exact situation that occurred at a post office. The front of the building all but collapsed and they called in our SERVPRO® Heroes to clean and restore the damage. When something as important as mail is involved, it is important to get the job done as soon as possible, and they called us just in time!

Basements, attics, that spot behind your dresser that never gets any sunlight; Mold can be in any space with the correct mixture of moisture and temperature. The only trouble is, the longer it goes unnoticed, the more damage it is liable to cause.

The above photo shows a corner of mold in a crawl space that just couldn’t be seen or reached by the owner of the house. Our professionals came in and did what they do best, they found the mold, assessed the damage, and cleaned it out.

Even though mold can hide anywhere, it’s no match for our SERVPRO® Heroes.

While mold is sometimes immediately visible, there are some times when it’s in a place that is less than easy to access. If you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t there.

Recently in local news, it’s been known that the Pekin Library has finally opened its doors again. The library was shut down after a storm at the end of last year caused a flood and sewage backup that affected most of the building (an example of the damage is shown in the attached photo). Our teams were called in for the cleanup and after a couple of months not only cleaning the building but also taking care of the books inside it, the doors reopened and business is as usual!

At the end of 2018, we were called to take care of Kouri’s Pub in Pekin Illinois. The ceiling was in desperate need of deep cleaning and we were more than happy to come out and help (especially since our contents crew had a chance to work in a toasty warm area during the cold winter months).

Here is a great example of just how talented our contents crew is. This rug was so dirty that the original colors were completely altered. The contents crew was able to use the right cleaning chemicals to restore the piece to its former vibrancy, giving us an astonishing look at the difference between dingy and bright.

The Continuing Education Classes that were presented on December 11^th were Ethics Boot Camp and Essentials of Legal Liability and Insured Status. Todd Davis was the instructor for the classes and his energy and his knowledgeability on the subjects made for an interesting day for the attendees. We look forward to his next visits.

The person who's bathroom is featured in these before and after pictures played it smart and had SERVPRO come do their Bathroom Dry Out for them. They knew that dealing with gray water could potentially be hazardous.

In the featured photo, you can see that there is damage to the door of this garage. This is the result of an attempted break in. When the home owner noticed the damage, they got a hold of SERVPRO.

The flooding damaged many areas of the home and was the result of a pipe that had burst in the ceiling. Almost every room in the home's first level was flooded with water.

SERVPRO was able to extract the excess water and moisture from the home and then replace the drywall and flooring for our client. Needless to say, they were very pleased!

This flooded home had major water damage throughout the entire home. It was particularly bad in the Living room where water from pipes in the ceiling had been dripping for days while the owners were away on a holiday vacation.

We flooded our house to demonstrate how we extract and monitor moisture in the house.  That’s Jason Fletcher in the black shirt, and Todd Davis is the instructor in the suit.  We had some employees from SERVPRO of Springfield there too.

This flooded unit had major water damage throughout the entire home. It was especially bad in the bedrooms where water from pipes in the ceiling had been dripping for days while the owners were away on vacation.

The customer was extremely pleased with SERVPRO's help and professionalism. They were even able to get the unit turned around and back on the rental market without serious loss of funds.

The extent of the damage was contained to the bathroom, laundry room and basement. Thankfully the damage occurred on the basement level so as to not affect any additional areas below that floor.

Gray and Black water should be considered extremely dangerous. The water is unsanitary and may contain bacteria that could cause serious illness.

This is a before picture of a biohazard bathroom clean up that SERVPRO did recently. There was human waste as well as trash all over the bathroom. We cleaned it up quickly and had it sparkling in no time.
